Columbia's corner tavern since 1903, when it opened as the Union Hotel for the mill and railroad crowd. The name's a Teddy Roosevelt reference, and Sherry Landis and Dave Zahm have run it since 2000. The bar itself is the show — hand-carved from a single walnut tree by a Lancaster planing mill, under a stamped tin ceiling, with preservation awards to prove it. Ask for the Beer Bible — they claim the biggest beer selection in the area and back it up with constant rotation. Wednesday is Wing Nite, Tuesday goes Tex Mex, Thursday means mussels, and the crab soup and Rough Rider ribs are the orders. They open at 4 and skip Sundays and Mondays, so plan accordingly — and if the night runs long, there's an 11-room inn upstairs.
