The York Symphony Orchestra opens a year-long Beethoven celebration at the Strand Theatre on Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 PM, and it's starting with the piece that needs no introduction: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, its famous four-note opening still one of the most recognizable moments in orchestral music. The program rounds out with Sergei Prokofiev's First Symphony and Christopher Theofanidis' Bassoon Concerto, written specifically for guest soloist Martin Kuuskmann, under the baton of conductor Lawrence Golan. A free pre-concert talk from Assistant Conductor Rebekah O'Brien adds context before the downbeat, and digital access for 60 hours after the show means the performance doesn't have to end when the lights come up. It's a season-opening night that suits the Strand's restored 1920s grandeur — 1,262 seats built for exactly this kind of sound. Tickets start at $13.
