CapFilm: The Circus with Live Organ Accompaniment by Don Kinnier

Downtown York's grandest room isn't one room — it's two. The Appell Center runs the 1,262-seat Strand and the more intimate 450-seat Capitol, a pair of restored 1920s movie palaces on North George Street that have been the city's big stage for a century (the Strand just hit its 100th birthday this season). One night it's a national touring act or a comedian, the next it's the York Symphony or a classic on the big screen through the CapFilm series. It's the kind of place with real history in the walls — it reopened in 1980 with Ella Fitzgerald on the bill and hasn't stopped booking since. Grab tickets, dress up a little if you feel like it, and remember that a proper night out doesn't always start at a bar. Sometimes the best seat in York has a curtain in front of it.

Some films are made to be watched exactly the way audiences first saw them, and Charlie Chaplin's The Circus gets that treatment on Friday, September 25 at 7:00 PM, when the Capitol Theatre's Mighty Wurlitzer organ comes alive under Don Kinnier of the Susquehanna Valley Theatre Organ Society. Chaplin's final silent-era film follows his Tramp character as he's mistaken for a pickpocket and stumbles into life as a traveling circus's star performer, romance and a lion and a tightrope full of monkeys included. Live organ accompaniment isn't a gimmick here — it's how this movie was meant to be experienced, and the Capitol, which has been screening films on North George Street since the silent era itself, is one of the few remaining rooms built to do it right. Rated G, 1 hour 12 minutes. All tickets $8.
